HARD-ELECTRONICS BLAXPLOITATION SINCE THE YEAR 2000

FR@NKENSTEIN OR THE 8 BIT PROMETHEUS (in a 500 words for SHARE PRIZE XI EDITION)

Frankenstein or the 8 bit Prometheus consists in a “literary remix” of the original Shelley’s classic, infused with references to a multitude of underground music sub-genres that is going to be out as a book in English in March 2018 for the Lisbon based comics and countercultures publisher Chili Come Carne  (Thisco series http://www.chilicomcarne.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=5&Itemid=77).

For the Prometheus novel two-hundreth years anniversary I’ve been presenting this work of re-writing together with the help of an “actor” (MC Shell8Bit)  and of an electronic-musician (“The Apprentice”) in the form of a radiodrama for www.ohcristo.com webradio. For Share Prize we’re going to showcase this live with a “theatrical” performance focused on the usage of obsolete technologies like Commodore 64 and, above all, Nintendo Game Boy Classic running a cartridge-software of music production called Lsdj.

The key point of the work is the figure of Giovanni Aldini. He was the nephew of Luigi Galvani, the man who discovered that dead frogs legs could be made to kick with the application of a spark. Aldini was an enthusiastic proponent of his uncles experiment with stimulating muscles with electricity, and when he received his first whole, fresh, executed criminals corpse, he set to work manipulating it. He carried out these experiments in the Royal College of Physicians in London, and it is thought that these activities have formed some of the inspiration for Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”. So by joining fingers and Game-Boy link in this low-resolution “séance” the three players of this performance are going to evoke his spirit. Aldini will narrate a compressed version of the Shelley’s masterpiece, exposing its language to clashing with retro-gaming jargon and simplifying its plot like the one of an arcade game.

This alternative Frankenstein will be punctuated by blips and bleeps of 8 bit music. Logistically the three medium-performers are going to form a triangle on stage, dressed in ritualistic costumes. The evocation will take the shape of an electronic-music concert of the length of 1 hour, using simple visual amplifying the screen of the two Game-Boy used.

This way the audience will have the chance to witness directly the “esoteric” element of music production on a 8 bit retro device. Whereas, MC Shell8bit will show off the best out of his theatrical tricks to render the drama of the monstrous application of technologies. He’s going to change sex (from female Shelley’s narrator to male Aldini’s), experiment in ventriloquism and more. We’ve been doing some public official rehearsal of this show at contemporary art gallery www.gallleriapiu.com  (where Oh Cristo web radio is hosted) reported in the pictures and in the video linked here.

The audio instead is the official broadcast of the different episodes of the radiodrama. The Frankenstein or the 8 bit Prometheus illustration is the cover of the English book  – by comic artist Rudolfo Da Silva – about to be released. Whereas in Italian I’ve published “Frankenstein Goes To Holocaust” ( http://www.agenziax.it/frankenstein-goes-to-holocaust/ ) in 2016 for Agenzia X editions, the publisher formerly known as Shake underground editions.
